What motivates a person to expatriate and leave his home country? Economics?  Climate? Persecution? Opportunity? Lifestyle? Politics? Maybe a combination of all of the above?  The following is an historical account  of how this path evolved for one such individual who is known as Rex Freeman and how he turned several significant obstacles into the launching pads to his dreams.  We offer this as a story of inspiration and hope!

In the early 90’s Rex was in the insurance business and did well with it.  One year he earned a very nice bonus from the company he produced for and the IRS decided that they deserved to get the bonus more than he did.  He disagreed. He did the work !

Rex was determined to stand up and fight for his rights and property and this steered him to the tax honesty movement and an intense study of the law.  As he learned the truth about taxation and the law in America it became painfully clear that, what Americans were all being told to believe was not at all how the law read.  Rex liked how the law read and he wanted to follow the law !  He used the law to enforce his rights and he kept his bonus money.

This experience piqued his curiosity though and he could only wonder if people were acting strictly in accordance with public ‘policy’ and misguided beliefs and not according to the law on this very important tax issue, what other issues might there be that needed to be looked at?   After all, it was well known that the IRS was causing divorce, suicides, economic ruin and more.  What else could be going on in other ‘venues’ ?

Rex spent the next several years virtually living in the Colorado Supreme Court law library and studied intensely at Denver University pouring through the books there.   He was fascinated with what he was finding in his research. It was not at all what he had been led to believe all of his life.

Along the way he started a grass roots citizens legal self defense group called The American Law Club.  This informal group of concerned citizens took it upon themselves to research the law and apply it in ways that were, well, quite liberating !   The main idea was to enforce the law for their own benefit and keep abusive public tyrants at bay so that they could live peaceful lives and protect their property from aggressive, overzealous bureaurats or worse.

The group began to learn how people are duped into voluntarily giving up their rights in exchange for commercial privileges and as a result, they have no rights, only privileges and liabilities.  Of course privileges can be taken away from the grantor at any time, rights cannot.  God given rights can only be ‘given’ away voluntarily.  This was key.

Example: People have always had the right to locomotion.  To move from point A to point B. The right to travel is basic and fundamental throughout history.  So when did your ‘rights’ to travel stop and your ‘privilege’ to drive a motor vehicle begin?   The answer is simple:  when you voluntarily gave up your ‘right to travel’ in exchange for the privilege of being able to be involved in ‘transportation’.   Through a legal analysis of the legal meanings of words and the court cases supporting those definitions (not what you ‘think’) makes it clear that ‘transportation’ is a commercial activity and since commercial transportation is carrying goods or people for hire,  this is a regulated activity.  Instant presto, rights converted to privileges! By virtue of our blind acceptance that when we drive a vehicle on the road we are engaged in ‘transportation’ we unwittingly ask for regulated privileges in exchange for our rights.

Example #2:  You pay for your car in cash, or pay off the loan and you get the title, right?   Wrong!   You get a ‘certificate of title’.  A certificate of title is NOT the title !  Just like being on your employers group insurance plan.  You have a ‘certificate of insurance’ not the actual insurance policy.  The employer owns that, not you.

Back to the car. So if you paid cash for the car and all you have is the ‘certificate of title’, then who has the ‘actual title’?  The actual title comes with the car and is delivered to the dealer from the manufacturer and is called the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO).  When you buy the car you ‘ask’ to have it registered with the corporate STATE OF…. For your privileges and the dealer complies with your request and sends the MSO to the state.  The state now owns ‘the’ (not your) car for which you paid cash.  Get this MSO from the dealer when you pay cash next time and you won’t have to register the car or ever worry about unwarranted harassment !  You will have ‘allodial’ title (beholden to no one) to ‘YOUR’ property and nobody can tell you what to do with it !  That’s a bit oversimplified, so be sure to look before you leap. Don’t do this without experienced guidance.

Did the car dealer commit an illegal conversion of assets and defraud you of the property rights that you paid cash for?  Hmmm ?!  I’d like to see that issue in court someday. You paid, but you never got title to the property.  What happened was this, because of our ignorance of the law and our rights, we voluntarily ask to have the car registered with the state because we don’t know any better and that’s what you’re ‘supposed to do’, right?    Again, we volunteer our rights to property away in exchange for commercial privileges granted by the state.  The title now goes to the state and we become subservient to the state corporate revenue laws never having the benefit of the property rights that we paid for.  This is how the state can confiscate ‘their’ car if you don’t follow their rules to their liking.  How could they confiscate it if it were actually ‘Your’ property?  They couldn’t.  Plain and simple.

The law club found the legal solution to this little problem and they had increasing numbers of Law Club members traveling around town (non-commercially) in their own personal property in absolute freedom from state intervention.  The weekly meetings were held in the V.F.W. hall only two blocks from the main Denver city police station and it wasn’t long before they were getting attention not only from the 10:00 news team, which tried to paint them as ‘kooks’ but members were getting followed home on occasion by police escorts after the police found this parking lot full of cars with ‘funny’ license plates.   From time to time the rookie cops would pull one of them over and ask for their papers.  Usually after an inordinate wait while they were discussing the situation on the radio with the dispatcher, they would bring back the papers and wish the driver a happy day.  One cop was so upset that he couldn’t do anything with one of the members, he was seen banging his fists on his dashboard and took off in his cruiser without even returning the paperwork.  No worries, they were only copies anyway.

Think about the ramifications to the state if everyone caught on to this auto registration and drivers license scam and those revenues dried up.  Interesting.

They found similar problems that the status quo system had on many more issues.  The fact is that these people in the government ‘control system’ are so used to getting their way without being questioned or challenged in any way, they simply didn’t know how to handle it when one of us who are ‘in the know’ comes along to interfere with their  ‘business as usual’ . It was quite comical with the stories that were coming in rapidly from all of our members.

Property taxes is a big issue, the marriage ‘license’,  and there are many more which show us that the people in the USA have been duped and any talk about rights and freedom is mere smoke and mirrors upon an ignorant populace who are intimidated by the big and mighty OZ!

Those who were busy at the American Law Club were appalled at the state of tyranny there, yet delighted to know that there were remedies at law.  They pursued them vigorously and took it to the next level.

Another group they learned about was formed on the West Coast and it was called the Civil Rights Task Force or C.R.T.F. for short.  The idea of this group was to inform and educate not only the citizenry, but also public officials and law enforcement of their duly certified obligations to the people as stated in ‘the law’. They formed a local chapter and the goal was to keep public servants honest and serving us, not plundering and pillaging us.

The group had nice blue windbreaker jackets made up with the C.R.T.F emblazoned in large yellow letters on the back much like the alphabet soup gang agencies like to use.  They ’d wear these over professional shirts and ties and walk into the local district courtrooms very politely with clipboards and notepads as court watchers.  They were the people’s eyes and ears to see what was actually going on in these courtrooms and let the local persecutors know that they were being watched to observe their exemplary execution of their duties and the law.

The D.A.s, the county prosecutors, bailiffs, deputies and even the judges were in a mild panic.  Could it be the Feds doing impromptu investigations ?  One well known county persecutor was overheard to say “who are these people?” with a very pained and strained look on her face.  They were very nervous.   The C.R.T.F. had their attention.

As Rex was doing a tour and signing an office lease in a fancy  downtown Denver high rise wearing this jacket.  The office setting was an executive suite used by attorneys.  It was chosen for it’s nice law library and comfortable accoutrements.  The attorneys walking by that day who noticed them in their jackets were equally curious and could we say maybe even a bit ‘squeamish’?

The group was accomplishing its objectives.  The warning bell had been rung !  The citizens wanted lawful government.  No more ‘business as usual’.

Along the way this notoriety led to a weekly radio show to share the good news that people actually could protect themselves and use the law doing so.  This radio show was pulling the curtain back even further on the big bad Wizard of Oz and he was being exposed for what he actually was!

During these times they were actively involved in the common law court movement, holding the ‘Peoples Supreme court’ for ‘Colorado state’ apart from the corporate government revenue centers  ‘judicial palaces’ replete with Masonic symbolism embedded into the architecture and décor throughout the buildings aka THE STATE OF COLORADO.    This was directly challenging the authority of those foreign revenooers.

You see the republic which operates ‘at law’ has nothing to do with the corporate STATE OF….which operates according to corporate bylaws otherwise known as state statutes copyrighted by the Queen of England.  These are completely different animals and one has nothing to do with the other.

This local activity had enlisted the support of state representatives and a popular state senator.  A large statewide contingent had convened a statewide common law grand jury with media attention and invitees from the corporate state in attendance to observe the people breathing life back into the republic.

One such proceeding was held in the city council chambers of a nearby local town (with permission of course) and the county sheriff provided some deputies to help keep the peace. An invited DA from that local county said afterwards that it was the most professional court proceeding he’d witnessed and if he had any issues he would bring it to this ‘peoples’ court !  These folks knew their stuff and did well taking care of business.

This particular one was not ultimately a peaceful event however.  There were visitors.  They were well armed, corporate government head bangers in black uniforms with no insignia and they prowled  the parking lot, trying to intimidate those in attendance, jotting down license plate numbers.   They were confronted head on and absolutely refused to identify themselves.  The deputies there to keep the peace intervened and all were able to eventually leave peacefully.

This was a nationwide movement at the time and was ultimately crushed through pure force, intimidation and tyranny and nothing more.

On another front, the intense studies brought these people to know the Uniform Commercial Code and the ‘money’ issue very well which involved understanding the distinction between public money and private negotiable instruments. Actually, there is currently no distinction between the two in a practical sense because there is no public money in circulation, only private negotiable instruments which cannot be negotiated for lawful money.  One can only exchange one 'promise to pay' (private note) for another promise to pay (private note) and nobody ever gets paid ‘at law’!  All we ever do is to discharge the liability by incurring another liability.  This is an interesting thread to follow when you have time.

Rex used this knowledge of the law to successfully discharge a man’s lease on his car. The law was presented plainly up front in a cover letter to the finance company.  The private nature of the negotiable instrument was also fully disclosed and specific instructions were given on how to redeem the private negotiable instrument.  They received it, had every opportunity to refuse it, accepted it and complied with the request to voluntarily release the ‘certificate of title’ to the lessee who then, by way of agreement, that only upon the finance company’s voluntary delivery of the certificate of title, would he turn the car and certificate of title over to Rex.  He only wanted out of the lease.

The Finance company was apparently happy, the man was happy and Rex was happy with the nice car.  EveryoneI performed as agreed and only received the car after the finance company accepted the U.C.C.  instrument and released the title and let the man out of the lease.  Fine.  Done deal!  And all according to the law.

Moving on…

In one of Rex' court watching episodes he was caught visiting Gary, a defendant in an orange suit who was on the wrong end of a nasty personal vendetta fight with the State Attorney General for the State of Colorado.  He was at the defendant’s table inside the bar when the judge walked into the courtroom and everyone stood up.  So he did too.

The prosecuting attorney entered his appearance in the court and introduced his entourage of assistants who came armed to the teeth to try and bury Gary.   When he was done everyone looked at Rex ! Ooops.

He merely introduced himself as an administrative assistant to the defendant (who didn’t believe in using bar attorneys) not his attorney or counsel of any kind.  The prosecutor threw an absolute fit and tried to get Rex thrown out of court: “He’s not an attorney”, “He’s not licensed to practice law”, “He’s not registered to work on behalf of the defendant.” And the tirade went on.

Rex merely pointed out to the judge that the defendant was all by himself, did not have any counsel.  Rex further pointed out that the defendant (who happened to be one solitary midget only 4’ tall) was certainly entitled to administrative assistance to help him take notes and stay on point, especially in view of the army of assistants that the prosecutor brought with him.  “If the court wishes to impart any semblance of providing a level playing field to the public, then certainly the defendant is entitled to some administrative assistance in view of the entourage we find now at the prosecutors table!”

The judge let Rex stay and you could see the fumes pouring out of the ears of the prosecutor. Rex was a wild card.  They had no idea who he was or what he was capable of and this interrupted their ‘business as usual’ routine which they are used to in ‘the brotherhood’.

This defendant also had another case in process in another county along similar lines.  This new court facility there is known as the heart of the ‘New World Order’ for the Colorado justice system.  This is where all the political opponents get sent to get ‘buried’ in a Star Chamber.

Emboldened by his previous success with the judge in the other courtroom, this time he showed up intentionally with the defendant and got the judge to issue him a court order granting unlimited attorney-client privileges in jail which he personally delivered to the jailers after the hearing.  At this time he presented his own common law I.D. card which used his true, given names .  These names are unique to him and was how he was uniquely known at the time.  They were his names.  Different cultures around the world use only the first two names as a matter of common practice.

They didn’t know what to do with the I.D. not being 'state issued'.  It was a significant delay before they gave it back after registering it and the court order with Gary's jailers.  When he finally left on high alert, a patrol car appeared out of nowhere and they had him pulled over mainly because they wanted to know who the heck this was running roughshod over their court cases and throwing a kink into the predetermined persecution of this defendant.   Of course ‘pretextual’ stops are illegal, but that didn’t stop them from going ahead anyway.

It was a 45 minute roadside encounter with the deputy who didn’t know how to handle Rex and his questions or responses.  He called backup and soon the entire area was lit with flashing lights.  They finally gave him a ticket for driving without a license which he refused to sign and the deputy was kind enough to acknowledge (Rex doesn’t enter into contracts with the state- a ticket is a contract to appear and pay a fine)  He had the whole thing on tape.   The next radio show theme was:  “How to nullify that traffic ticket before the ink is even dry !”  He played the tape live on the air and coached his listeners how to protect their rights in any traffic stop.

The show was a hit and Rex went through the tape piece by piece explaining the legal positioning he was doing with the officer and he proceeded to show the world how to neuter ‘the revenue machine’ right on the spot.

They were listening.  The battle lines were being drawn!  Rex was now a priority target.  They needed to find a way to stop him as this was getting far too public and far too many people were learning far too much, too quickly.

The smear campaign started in earnest.  He was ambushed in a parking lot by the local Investigative News Team who clearly had a predetermined agenda to paint him as a criminal lunatic for using the U.C.C. the way he had. Rex offered the reporter a complete interview and lesson in the law which he could research himself, if only he would consent to letting Rex have witnesses present and tape the entire thing and provide a copy of it.  He refused.  He wasn’t interested in the truth.  He had a job to do and couldn’t let the facts get in his way.

The law club was the subject of a prime time new series.  The newspapers started associating Rex with ‘white supremacists’, ‘armed militia groups’ and the like which had no foundation in truth.

During his next court watching appearance they arrested Rex for ‘criminal impersonation’ based on the fact that he used his own given names.  He was in jail with a $30,000 bond when hit and run defendants were getting out on $5,000 bail.  Funny how you can kill people and not get much attention. But, speak publicly about the law, and protecting peoples’ rights....Now that’s serious !

It took Rex awhile to raise bail and while he was in jail awaiting bond, he was able to get to a phone to do his weekly radio show ‘from the inside’.  He called in collect to my board operator at the radio station and spent the hour interviewing inmates as to how their rights had been, and were being, violated by the county.  They were trying to shut me up and this was not exactly what they had planned on.  It’s not easy to keep a man on a mission down!

Funny thing was, a central element to the crime of ‘criminal impersonation’ was that you need to be attempting to gain benefits from impersonating another individual, whom they never had nor could produce!  Obviously, it was a trumped up charge.

He defended himself in court against several felony counts.   The prosecution pulled out all the stops.  They had every police officer who ever issued him a ticket in there.  They had the check cashing clerk of the local grocery store, they had a representative from the social security agency, special investigators and a list of witnesses as long as your arm!  Since they didn’t have the facts or the law on their side, the strategy was to load so much inference and innuendo from so many people, that the jury would be confused and come back saying: “well he must have done something wrong, look at all these witnesses!”  After listening to prosecutor put on her case, you’d have thought he was worse than the serial killer, Ted Bundy !

Then it was Rex' turn.   He called each of the prosecutor’s witnesses back to the stand in cross examination.  He destroyed the testimony of each and every one with precise detail and strategic positioning and near the end of this seminar he was putting on for the jury, everyone in the courtroom could sense that he was having a ball and you could see the prosecutor slumped in her chair, face in her hands, knowing she was defeated.

After 4 days of trial and 2 days of jury deliberations, they jury came back hung.  They couldn’t convict Rex for this sham proceeding they were attempting to pull off.

It was a huge victory !

After the reading of the verdict, the judge asked that since Rex was not a member of the bar and that he had no jurisdiction over him, he wanted to keep the exculpatory exhibits while the prosecutor was pending a decision on whether or not to re-try the case, which was their right in a hung jury.  Rex figured that there would be no way they would subject themselves to such humiliation again, so he naievely agreed.

That was a mistake.  They did come back in a few weeks and did retry the case with a different strategy.  The first time they had underestimated Rex' ability in the courtroom and gave him free reign thinking that he ’d probably hang himself. It didn’t happen.   The second time they wouldn’t make that same mistake.   Mysteriously, the key exculpatory exhibits came up missing.  What a surprise ! In the second trial the judge gave restrictive orders that applied only to Rex and not the prosecutor and virtually tied his hands behind his back with overt and egregious acts acceptable only in a Star Chamber or Inquisition hearing.

Rex was precluded from putting on a defense.   He had no chance.  When it was over, he was convicted and found guilty of ‘impersonating himself’ which is a joke still to this day in the area.  I was looking at 3 years in prison.

Simultaneous to this activity, they initiated another felony proceeding against him in the neighboring county where his private, lawful, U.C.C. negotiable instruments were delivered. He was anxiously awaiting my chance to bring this issue into court and have a ball with it and they knew it.  They were on thin ice and were at great risk to have this critical issue exposed and brought out into the open in a court of law with someone as knowledgable as Rex.  Rex even had a pretty decent judge, bless his heart.

They did the smart thing, they offered a plea bargain with a sentence to run concurrently with his other one, so there would be no additional penalty to Rex, yet they could notch their post with a guilty plea.  Since Rex was facing 13 years should they tie him to a post again without allowing a proper defense, like they did in the first trial, Rex figured he’d be better off smart and humble than proud and persecuted again.  Certainly, they wouldn’t let such a critical issue as the money issue be dealt with fairly in the court.  It would have absolutely HUGE ramifications.  He took the plea bargain and felt like a prostitute. He couldn’t count on a fair trial and that reality was very scary.  As the saying goes: “It’s dangerous to be right, when your government is wrong!”

Rex' time in the clink was one of the best times of his life for many reasons.  It was a minimum security ‘hotel’ with plenty of recreation and outdoor sports and physical activity. He worked in the kitchen so he ate well and they gave him a job, of all places, as a clerk in the law library !

He was out in a year renewed and refreshed with a new strategy for 'Preserving the peace'.  The first thing on his mind was to get back in the teaching mode but only this time, not in a confrontational manner as he was doing previously (it was dangerous back then, but now it’s deadly!) . He began writing over 200 issues of the Freeman Forum (now defunct) which is when he adopted his pen name which has later become his bona fide persona.

His teaching now is to help people achieve peace and prosperity, in full compliance with the law, using powerful business methods and strategies.  He was a Phoenix rising from the ashes. Rex was fortunate enough to get married at age 40 for the first time and  quickly became an expat and moved to Costa Rica.  They decided  to start some new business there and build a system to help people become independent and find peace avoiding much of the lawlessness of the world.

After what he had gone through, and after watching what the system was doing to so many other people he knew first hand, it was clear that there is no reliable law in the states anymore.  Not for the people anyway. They only use the law to persecute people, eliminate opposition, extract money or confiscate property now.  That’s the only use of the law there.  You cannot use the law to protect yourself from the ‘mob’.   They were fearful of a lawless government gone haywire and left for greener pastures.

They also feared what the foreign policy was going to wreak on the American public by way of breeding terrorists.  And they also feared a society unravelling in moral decay. They packed our bags and left the country.

Arriving in beautiful Costa Rica they thought they had found paradise.  You’d think his legal problems would be over now having escaped to this new eden.   Not so fast.

Costa Rica has legal system based on Napoleonic code which presumes guilt until proven innocent based on any baseless complaint.  So not only do you have so many of the locals to deal with, who feel it is their national heritage to steal from foreigners with impunity (and they do), but with the volume of cases the system is dealing with and the understaffed, underfunded ineficiencies of the court system there, it attracts all of the ‘Wanted’ and the ‘Unwanted’ from the USA and Canada and elsewhere, which is  double trouble.

Rex got involved in a business consulting arrangement with a woman named Susan and her attorney 'Lobo' who were clients whom they later discovered were trying to steal a $5 million piece of property through fraudulent manipulations. He later found out they needed this crime to bail themselves  out of another fraud they got caught in on another property.   They put a kabosh on their plans and filed suit in what was to be a very nasty fight with other powerful people worthy of a book of its own.   They had no defense. Without either the facts or the law on their side they had only one option which was to try and slander and discredit Rex and his wife to diffuse attention from themselves and try and cut the legs out from underneath their nemesis..

They immediately went on a personal attack trying to smear his good name in Costa Rica and this has spilled over from there. They found a mouthpiece with an internet  Panama Newspaper rag, Eric Jackson, to print all kinds of undounded, biased, nasty untruths, inferences, c-r-a-p and half truths about Rex.  The bogus writer never knew Rex or had any dealings with him and had no basis for anything he wrote so he was obviously ‘fed’ this information from somewhere.  Hmmmm.  I wonder?   When he requested an interview from Rex it was very clear that he had a predetermined agenda and he wanted nothing to do with the truth of the matter.  He was going to print what he had in mind regardless of the truth.  So Rex ignored him with a warning to respect the truth.

So he printed his filth for profit as he was likely paid to do.  .  They must have figured if they did it in Panama and Rex was in Costa Rica there was nothing Rex could do about it.  They were wrong and Rex ended up having to sue him for blatant criminal slander in Panama and the truth will be known about that soon enough.

So, idiots and power hungry or cash starved lunatics are prevalent wherever you go.  That cannot be ignored.  The world is full of them.   In Rex' case, the truth is known and has been the objective from the beginning.   Standing up for the truth is not always easy.  But it can be done in ways much easier than the road he have chosen. He has learned.

Rex now lives as an expat in a tropical paradise surrounded by countless birds, flowers and foliage with his 7 wonderful dogs and a lovely wife who puts up with his quirkiness and continuing battles.  It’s warm sometimes but the pool helps that.  The country he lives in has solid family values, a good work ethic and Christian philosophies permeating most of society which is more than we can say about where Rex came from.

Rex works with people interested in the international lifestyle and all of its nuances and ramifications having put together  worthy network of resources from around the world to assist people in simply finding their own piece of heaven on earth.

Learning how to capture the benefits of the international marketplace and position oneself accordingly might be the best thing one can aspire to and Rex has accomplished that. .

From the lessons learned, you can’t ‘Fight the System’ head on and expect to win.  But if you’re smart, you can use it to your advantage with a simple ‘strategic plan’.

Vive l’independence !  Truth will Prevail (if you insist on it!)
